Neighbourhood Support History

Neighbourhood Watch is an international programme first started by the police in New York in 1977, in response to rising crime. The police held meetings with local community leaders, and with police support, communities set up strategies to combat crime themselves, utilising crime prevention methods of personal, home and car safety. The success rate of Neighbourhood Watch spread rapidly to Canada, Australia, The United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

North Shore Neighbourhood Watch is an established community based programme, which was regenerated in 1993 at the original Takapuna police station, where it ran a full time office, manned by a retired senior sergeant. In 2001 it became an Incorporated Society, changed its title to North Shore Neighbourhood Watch/Support Inc, and applied for affiliation to the then new national body of Neighbourhood Support Inc.

Today

In 2009 North Shore City Neighbourhood Watch Inc. reviewed it's aims and objectives, changed it's name to Neighbourhood Support North Shore Inc. and introduced a new constitution.

NSNS maintains an office at the North Shore Policing Centre that is manned part time by an Operations/Business Manager. It also runs a highly successful Community Patrols programme manned by volunteers, and enjoys a very close working relationship with North Shore Police, North Shore City Council, Accident Compensation Corporation and community groups.
